Your career spans impressive leadership roles across various business and healthcare organizations. Can you share the pivotal moments that shaped your journey into healthcare and technology?
My journey into healthcare and technology is deeply personal. As a parent of a daughter born prematurely with significant special needs, I experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating a complex healthcare landscape. Despite receiving excellent care, we struggled to find the answers we so desperately needed. I wasn’t frustrated with the clinicians—they were doing everything they could. But I could see that, in many cases, they were searching for solutions in a vast, overwhelming field of data. As someone passionate about technology, I realized I could make a difference by developing tools that support healthcare providers in their work. I’ve always believed that when used effectively, technology can empower clinicians, streamline decision-making, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. This vision has shaped my commitment to building solutions that enhance the healthcare experience for both providers and patients.
In your roles, you oversee a diverse portfolio of companies. How has this role refined your perspective on identifying and nurturing innovative technologies?
I’m incredibly proud of the technology we’ve developed throughout my career, but the real key to our success lies in how we approach innovation. We focus on identifying the critical problems facing our industry and then apply first-principles thinking to find solutions. By staying laser-focused on the problem rather than the technology itself, we’ve been able to create novel ways to leverage emerging technologies to drive meaningful change. One important lesson I learned early in my career is that people don’t care about the tech—they care about solutions. Our success has been built on understanding that and using that insight to develop solutions that truly address the challenges our clients face.
Your career includes a diverse mix of technical, strategic, and leadership roles, even outside the healthcare industry, including your time with the U.S. Army. How have these varied experiences contributed to your ability to lead and innovate in healthcare?
Each chapter of my career has provided invaluable lessons that have shaped my ability to lead and innovate. My military experience, for example, was foundational in teaching me discipline, structure, and the importance of execution—skills that are essential in any leadership role. But perhaps the most important takeaway from that time was the significance of leadership itself, and how crucial it is to lead with purpose and clarity. As my career progressed, I also recognized the value of gaining a diverse range of experiences before stepping into more senior positions. These varied roles have given me a broad perspective, enabling me to make more informed decisions and provide leadership that is both adaptive and effective. Ultimately, it’s this combination of technical, strategic, and leadership experiences that has empowered me to innovate and lead with a well-rounded approach.
You have a significant amount of board experience and serve on several boards, including Belmont University and Ascend Federal and recently rolled off of the boards of The Nashville Health Care Council and The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. How have these roles shaped your understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the healthcare sector?
Serving on boards has been an incredibly valuable experience, as it offers a unique opportunity to view challenges from a variety of vantage points. Each board role allows me to approach problems from different angles, whether it’s within healthcare or other sectors, providing fresh insights and broader perspectives. This kind of exposure helps me understand the complexities of the healthcare industry in a more nuanced way. Additionally, board service provides a different avenue for learning and leadership development. It allows me to refine my leadership style by collaborating with diverse groups of people, navigating complex issues, and contributing to decision-making at a high level. Ultimately, these experiences have deepened my understanding of the opportunities and challenges within healthcare and equipped me with new ways to lead and innovate in the sector.
The mission of Seed Healthcare to disrupt the healthcare landscape through innovative technologies, particularly in early disease detection, resonates with your career focus. What excites you most about this mission?
What excites me most about Seed Healthcare’s mission is the focus of transforming the way we approach healthcare, starting with early disease detection. Early detection opens the door for early intervention, which can drastically improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden of disease. What’s even more exciting is the possibility of identifying health issues ‘pre-disease’—before they even manifest in the body. With the right technologies, we could shift from a reactive to a proactive healthcare model, empowering individuals to stay healthier for longer. This vision is a game-changer and represents the Holy Grail of healthcare: preventing illness before it begins. It aligns perfectly with the direction I see the industry moving in and serves as a North Star for the future of healthcare innovation.
What do you believe are the greatest opportunities in using advanced technologies like analytics, AI, and machine learning to address critical challenges in healthcare, especially in early disease detection?
The power of these advanced technologies lies in their ability to process vast amounts of data quickly and accurately, enabling us to identify patterns that would otherwise go unnoticed. In early disease detection, these technologies can analyze everything from genetic data to environmental factors, medical histories, and lifestyle patterns to identify risks long before symptoms appear. This could revolutionize our ability to diagnose conditions at their most treatable stages, improving outcomes and reducing costs. Additionally, AI and machine learning can help healthcare providers make more precise decisions, streamline workflows, and optimize treatments for individual patients based on real-time data. The integration of these technologies in healthcare holds the potential not just to detect disease earlier, but to create personalized, proactive care strategies that can prevent or delay the onset of chronic conditions, ultimately improving the overall health of populations.
As a member of Seed Healthcare’s Advisory Board and Investment Committee, how do you envision leveraging your expertise and network to help advance Seed’s vision of transforming healthcare for the better?
As an entrepreneur with a track record of building, scaling, and exiting businesses, I bring a strong foundation for evaluating investment opportunities. My experience in healthcare over the last 25 years has given me insight into two critical aspects of success: innovation and adoption. I can help identify companies with promising technologies and help them navigate the complexities of implementation within the healthcare. Additionally, my extensive network in the industry allows me to connect these companies with key stakeholders, driving traction and accelerating growth. In my role on Seed Healthcare’s Advisory Board and Investment Committee, I aim to leverage this expertise and network to help advance Seed’s mission of transforming healthcare.
